Finally a stable OS for the PC.....
As usual, Microsoft is emulating a Mac..... thats what windows was from the
beginning.
Sorry, but I will stick with my Mac....They have been stable since I bought my
first in Jan of 1984

Hesh, thanks for recognizing that the similarity it very striking. I'm
actually happy about that because I want the user experience to be good
for everyone. I like my mac, but that doesn't mean others have to. When
you say more capable out of the box, what are you thinking of?

I don't have anything (per se) against macs, but I just can't resist giving the mac guys a friendly jab when they say MS ripped off "their" interface.

yeah... I don't know. Maybe if you are the kind of person that likes to continually tinker with your systems and learn everything about them Linux (or other flavors of Unix) is ok, but for the "average" user or corporate users the hidden cost of ownership is substantial.

I fell into the Unix trap about 6-7 years ago, took all of our servers to unix etc. etc. etc., and while it is true the environment did stablize development took a lot longer, the cost of finding good technical support and developers doubled, and it really limited us on commercial applications.

I think home users will find similar problems when trying to make the switch.

I am not saying it is a bad system system, but it is one where you don't immediately see the drawbacks -- you find out about those once you are fully committed.

If you are comfortable with Unix it might be a good solution, but for the rest of us... I think it may be wise to stick with the devil you know, rather than the one you don't.

I bought my first Mac (MacBook) 2 months ago, and have not looked back since.

In the course of my work I have used several flavors of Linux (Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, BSD, etc.), Windows, Solaris, etc., and to me, nothing beats OSX (especially for the casual user).

I have "hotrodded" the MacBook a bit by installling a 100gig drive and 2 gigs of RAM....it's alittle beast now! :)

Also, if need be, I can now run Windows on my Mac (using Parallels or Boot Camp). This comes in handy for the few programs I use that aren't available for Mac (like Rhino).

Check out this baby: 64k RAM memory running CP/M from dual 5?-inch floppies with 91k capacity. It only weighs about 25 pounds.



The current trend toward OS compatibility is music to my ears.

What I mostly remember about the "good old days" of computing is that every brand of computer spoke its own dialect of whatever operating system it used, and that the "standard" RS-232 serial port generally was not standard at all.

Which made for all kinds of fun. Because of the lack of a true standard, the printer cable that would work with one brand of computer/printer combination would not work with a different printer or computer. Consequently most printers and other peripherals that connected via the RS-232 port did not come with a cable and you were stuck with getting one custom-made or figuring out all the pinouts and making one yourself. In some cases you even had to program your own custom driver, since not everyone adhered to the same ASCII "standard" character set.

Whatever operating system or platform you're using now is paradise by comparison.
